Fire, Cloud, and Light
This oil painting is the largest canvas I have worked on to date. For the top portion I blended out thin layers of oil paint with makeup brushes. The bottom portion was painted with thicker layers of paint and accented with fake gold leaf.
This painting is inspired by the Bible. Numbers, colors, and symbols permeate the Bible and historical Biblical paintings; especially those in the middle ages. The number three appears quite frequently in the Bible and is represented most notably through the Holy Trinity. In Christian artwork from the middle ages the color blue, symbolized heaven and heavenly love. It also represented truth or the unveiling of truth. I used the number three in my artwork to represent the Trinity as well as three different ways God was represented in the Bible as in Exodus, “By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night,” and as in John, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” To position the points of light I utilized the golden ratio in order to create additional balance and harmony.
