“is that a sky? Light and holy blue”
This oil painting was inspired by parts of the poem “Evening in Skåne” by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and the title of this work is taken from part of the poem. Other relevant quotes from the poem include: “glowing as if shining through a red undercoat, and rising above all of it this silent blazing light of the sinking sun,” and, “forming figures, giant wings, canyons, and high mountains, before the first star and suddenly, there: a door so far off that maybe only birds have ever felt that kind of distance…” It was painted with both palette knives and brushes, and the faux gold leaf is placed at the center of the “star” to enhance its importance as a focal point.
